Lot Description
1911-S $10 MS66 PCGS. The story of the 1911-S ten dollar is a fascinating one and it is told in its entirety in the new book The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse Collection. This date was formerly a major rarity until a Catalan-speaking coin dealer approached Marc Emory in 1979 about 1911-S tens at a coin show in Basel, Switzerland. He eventually purchased 50 examples for $60,000. Most of the coins were high grade and according to Emory, " ... some of which were pristine Gems. All were Mint State with the same light patina over them." "Light patina" does not accurately describe the color present on this particular coin. Both sides exhibit deep red color with strong underlying mint frost. The surfaces show pronounced granularity which gives a randomly dispersive appearance to the thick mint frost. The only mark of note is located on the reverse, a horizontal abrasion in the field below the final A in AMERICA. Only 10 coins have been certified MS66 by the two major services (eight by PCGS and two by NGC), with none finer (11/06). This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the finest preserved 1911-S tens known. From The Kutasi Collection.
