1861 Liberty Double Eagle. MS-62 (NGC). Scarce in any Mint State grade, these 1861 double eagles are often overlooked as common, which is true in circulated grades but not at all the case in Mint State. Relatively few survived without some degree of wear and the populations of this date have not been significantly skewed by shipwreck recoveries that contained large numbers of new specimens. Full satiny luster with a solid strike and strong visual appeal for the clean surfaces and green-gold planchet. Nearly 3 million were coined of this date, with NGC's Census noting about 500 grading events for Mint State survivors, at the MS-62 level the number of survivors drops off quickly.
