Lot Description
1914-S $10 MS 65 PCGS. The 1914-S is generally found with more vibrant luster than either the 1912-S or 1913-S, and the present example does not disappoint in this regard. The surfaces display a richly frosted texture with slight granularity. Deeply set on both sides, green-gold color accents the above average striking definition. There are no noticeable distractions or pedigree markers. The San Francisco Mint delivered 208,000 eagles in 1914, a total that is roughly on par with those of 1909 and 1912. The issue falls in the middle of the S-mint Indian eagles in terms of overall rarity, being surpassed by the 1912-S and 1915-S, as well as the key 1920-S and 1930-S. Survivors are more difficult to locate than those of the 1908-S, 1909-S, 1910-S, 1911-S, and 1916-S deliveries. At the MS 65 grade level, the 1914-S is a landmark rarity with only 12 examples known to both NGC and PCGS (7/00).
