Satiny surfaces exhibit dominant medium-orange patina beneath a dusting of pale silvery tinting. Most abrasions are small in size and nicely concealed by the toning, although little effort is required to discern bold-to-sharp devices that point to a well-executed strike.
A scarce issue that has not benefited from the discovery of any sizeable hoards, the 1858-S is the fourth-rarest Type I Double eagle struck in the San Francisco Mint. This assessment is per Doug Winter and Adam Crum in the 2002 book An Insider's Guide to Collecting Type I Double Eagles.
