1860 Liberty Double Eagle. MS-62+ (PCGS). Described by Doug Winter and Adam Crum (<em>An Insider's Guide to Collecting Type I Double Eagles</em>, 2002) as the "second most available Type I Philadelphia double eagle produced during the 1860's," the 1860-P is definitely an underrated issue in Mint State. While survivors are obtainable enough in an absolute sense, they are almost always offered with at least some degree of wear. The aforementioned authors, in fact, account for a mere 50-60 coins extant in Mint State, those grading MS-63 or finer qualifying as Condition Census.<br /> Also ranking among the finest-certified survivors of the issue, this premium-quality BU is minimally abraded at the lower reaches of the Mint State grading scale. We see no distractions of note, in fact, allowing one to focus on rich orange-gold color and pleasing frosty luster. Sharply struck, as well, and seemingly earmarked for inclusion in a highly regarded Double Eagle set.
