Unlike many other Type I Double Eagles from the 1850s and 1860s, the 1860-P has not benefited to a great degree through the discovery and conservation of shipwreck coins. In fact, we know of not more than 100 examples that have come to light with the excavation of the S.S. Republic shipwreck. High-grade Uncs were conspicuous by their absence, thus confirming the continued rarity of the 1860 in the finest Mint State grades.
This lovely near-Gem is one of the finest examples to originate with the S.S. Republic shipwreck, and it has gone straight to the upper reaches of Condition Census for the issue. Bright with a softly frosted texture, both sides exhibit even color in a rose-gold shade. Minimally abraded, sharply struck and eagerly awaiting inclusion in an advanced Double Eagle collection.
