Lot Description
1875-CC $20 MS63+ NGC. CAC. The large double eagles are the most plentiful Carson City gold coins available to collectors but every date is a condition rarity, including the high-mintage 1875-CC. Thanks to substantial gold and silver mining that took place in the mid-1870s, the 1874-CC, 1875-CC, and 1876-CC twenties had the highest mintages of the entire Carson City double eagle series--the only three issues with mintages surpassing 100,000 coins. The Carson City Mint produced 111,151 double eagles in 1875. Survivors are frequently encountered, but rarely are they Mint State. This piece is the third finest that NGC and PCGS combined have certified. Each service has graded a single MS64; this coin is the only MS63+ specimen that either service has examined. It is fully lustrous, with brilliant and frosty yellow surfaces that have a few scattered, grade-consistent marks. The connoisseur of rare Carson City gold will appreciate the opportunity.
