Lot Description
1878-CC $20 AU55 NGC. Variety 1-A, that is noted for a lengthy vertical die scratch on the back of Liberty's neck near her hair. On the reverse, several bold die lines are found through the letters in DOLLARS, and another nearly touches the second T in TWENTY. The mintmark is widely spaced. Presumably, the dies were slightly damaged en route to Carson City from Philadelphia, where all coinage dies were made. A mere 13,180 pieces were struck, and the majority of the few hundred survivors are in XF and lower grades. AU examples with the bright, extensive luster and relatively unmarked surfaces of the present representative are very scarce, and under heavy demand from specialists of this popular western mint.
