Lot Description
1878-CC $20 AU53 NGC. Variety 1-A. Double eagle production dropped precipitously in 1878 at the Carson City Mint, to a mere 13,180 pieces. Probably no more than 300-350 examples survive today in all grades. Among Carson City double eagles, only the famous 1870 and 1871 issues can claim to be clearly rarer than the 1878-CC, although the low-mintage 1879-CC is virtually tied with this scarce date in terms of total number of specimens known. The present coin is an impressive AU53 specimen, with just a touch of wear on the boldly detailed design elements. The attractive orange-gold surfaces retain much original mint luster and show only minor signs of contact. Census: 37 in 53, 83 finer (2/12). Ex: Baltimore Auction (Bowers and Merena, 3/2009), lot 3948.
