Lot Description
1879 $20 MS63 NGC. The 1879 Double Eagle is a scarce and very underrated coin. It appears that this issue did not readily circulate as it is rarely seen in grades below AU53. Conversely, it is almost never seen in grades above MS61. Either a large group of these is sitting in some bank vault in Europe or, more likely, a very high percentage of the original mintage was melted. This is an exceptionally attractive example and, frankly, one of the most appealing Type Two Twenties we have ever seen, regardless of grade. Not only are the surfaces remarkably clean, but the fields are deeply mirrored on each side and when angled just so the frosted devices cast just a bit of a cameo effect against the fields. Fully struck also. The 1879 is extremely scarce in properly graded MS62 and very rare in MS63 with only three third-party graded examples currently known: two by PCGS and this single piece from NGC. One of the PCGS MS63s realized $9487.50 in the Bass IV Sale. It will be interesting to see what this lovely coin brings.
