Lot Description
1879 $20 MS61 NGC. FS-801. UNITED STATES and other reverse legends exhibit die doubling. The parity between gold, silver, and paper currency that was achieved in late December 1878, as well as huge numbers of gold and silver coins flowing back into the United States from Canada that had been hoarded since the Civil War, decreased the need for new coinage. Despite a moderate mintage exceeding 200,000 coins, the 1879 double eagle is scarce in Mint State, with most certified examples grading no more than AU55 to AU58, as a rule. This piece offers bounteous luster on the orange-gold surfaces, with fewer abrasions than might be expected for the grade confined largely to the reverse.
