Lot Description
1929 $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1929 is best summed up in the opening paragraph of the Morse book on Saint-Gaudens tens and twenties: {blockquote}"All of the issues from this date forward are great rarities in the Saint-Gaudens series. Of those five collectible issues (1929, 1930-S, 1931, 1931-D, and 1932), the 1929 is the most obtainable in terms of overall availability. Higher grade (MS63-64) coins are occasionally available, but Gems are rare."{/blockquote} The 1929 Saint-Gaudens twenty generally offers an excellent strike, generous luster, and attractive color that usually ranges from greenish-gold to yellow-gold. There are nonetheless few representatives at the Gem level, largely attributable to the excessive bag marks that dot the surfaces of most examples. Copper alloy spots are sometimes a factor as well. David Akers notes in the second edition of the Handbook that "most examples are noticeably abraded, although the occasional MS-64 with relatively smooth-looking surfaces is available. Exceptionally well-preserved 1929 Double Eagles are few and very far between." This is a lovely reddish-gold example with significant portions of each side interspersed with lilac. Abrasions are minimal, and there are no alloy spots on either side. The strike details are strong throughout, just missing the full designation, with only slight softness noted on the high point of the eagle's breast. In terms of overall eye appeal this piece suggests an even higher grade.
