Intense cartwheel activity ignites the brilliant centers, while halos of deep gold, sunset orange, vibrant crimson, and rich neon blue endorse the rims. An exceptional Gem example of the first commemorative quarter dollar issue in the series, 1892-1954; it was not until 1976 that the next commemorative in the denomination would be produced. (The first year of Washington quarter coinage, 1932, was intended as a commemorative, but two years later in 1934 the design became circulating coin of the realm.) Designed by Charles E. Barber, the Isabella quarter was petitioned into being in March 1893 by the Board of Lady Managers of the World's Columbian Exposition. These were later offered for sale in the Women's Building and without much fanfare. The result is that relatively few Exposition visitors knew of their existence.
