Lot Description
1939 50C Arkansas MS67 PCGS. The Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints each produced 2,100 Arkansas half dollars in 1939, which were sold in sets at $10 apiece. These vanished almost immediately owing to the small mintage, with most sets going to speculators. Collectors and Arkansas residents protested the Arkansas Commission's marketing tactics, which contributed to the later discredit of commemorative halves. When Congress passed the Act of August 5, 1939, revoking all previous authority to manufacture commemorative coins under previous acts, the immediate occasion was indignation over the Arkansas 1939 sets, which enriched coin dealers and speculators. The current 1939 Philadelphia issue is faintly toned a light gold in the centers, with darker gold, crimson, and purple coloration narrowly adhering to the borders around each side. The virtually blemish free surfaces emit vibrant luster, further adding to the beauty of this specimen. The design features are sharply struck on both sides. Ex: New York Signature Sale (Heritage, 7/02), as part of lot 5051, which realized $32,200. From the JFS Collection, the #1 All-Time PCGS Registry Set.
