Lot Description
1925-S 50C California MS68 NGC. Lovely rainbow colored target toning frames the lavender-gray center on the obverse. The reverse is equally as original, although the appearance is one of mottled champagne-apricot, electric-blue, and silver-gray shades. Every design element is sharply brought up, and the luster is satiny and bountiful. With nary a distracting abrasion to report and eye appeal to spare, this coin is every bit the Superb Gem. The California Diamond Jubilee Half Dollar was authorized by the Act of February 16, 1925. The money raised by selling these coins helped to fund local celebrations in San Francisco and Los Angeles in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of California's statehood. Although 150,000 coins were originally produced, 63,606 pieces were melted as unsold. Since many coins were placed into circulation, it is easy for one to recognize the rarity of this issue at the MS68 level of preservation. NGC and PCGS combined have seen just 11 coins in this grade, and none finer (4/02).
