Lot Description
1922 Grant Memorial. Star. MS-63 (PCGS). OGH. A lustrous specimen with pale gold and champagne highlights on mattelike surfaces. Struck from a clashed obverse die with evidence of same at DO in the denomination. Choice for the grade with plenty of eye appeal. Far scarcer than its No Star counterpart -- just 4,256 examples of the With Star variety were distributed. At the time there was very little attention paid to preserving the quality of such pieces, and over the years many if not most were dipped and brightened, some of them multiple times. The result was that by the advent of the great commemorative boom that started in the summer of 1935, the 1922 Grant Memorial With Star was recognized as the classic rarity of the series -- quite difficult to find (with the 1928 Hawaiian coming in second). Today in 2012 the tradition of the 1922 Grant With Star is largely forgotten.
