Lot Description
1922 50C Grant with Star MS67 NGC. Despite his perceived shortcomings as President, Ulysses S. Grant has received a number of numismatic honors after his death, many in commemoration of his time as a Civil War general. His portrait appears on the fifty dollar note, and in 1922, the centennial of his birth, Philadelphia struck two commemoratives bearing his image, a dollar in gold and a half dollar in silver. The piece offered here is a delightful, carefully preserved example of the elusive With Star half dollar type, which has a net mintage of just 4,256 pieces. Its nearly flawless surfaces exhibit pleasing luster beneath soft plum, blue-gray, gold-orange, and ruby patina. The unaided eye detects only a single minuscule flaw in the right obverse field. A top-notch classic commemorative condition rarity. One of eight coins in a tie for finest known, five graded by NGC and three by PCGS (10/07).
