Lot Description
1922 50C Grant With Star MS66 NGC. The original request from the Ulysses S. Grant Centenary Memorial Association was for 200,000 commemorative gold dollars. Half dollars were not suggested, but the legislation was changed to authorize just 10,000 gold dollars along with 250,000 half dollars. Profits from the various Grant commemorative issues were earmarked to provide suitable memorial buildings in southern Ohio to celebrate the birth centennial of the Civil War general and 18th president. Collectors might assume that the rare With Star variety, with just 4,256 pieces struck, was an addition to the original half dollar design. In reality, the more common No Star variety came after production of the With Star pieces. This wonderfully preserved example boasts uncommon sharpness and vibrancy for the issue, lightly toned at the borders in speckled violet and blue-green shades. Census: 43 in 66, 7 finer (1/13). Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2007), lot 1155, which brought $12,650.
