1928 Hawaiian Sesquicentennial. MS-66 (NGC). This is an impressive, conditionally scarce Gem with satin to softly frosted luster and nary a distracting abrasion to either side. Uncommonly vibrant in an example of this type, and further adorned with mottled sandy-copper peripheral toning.<br /> The 1928 Hawaiian ranks as the single most desirable issue in the commemorative half dollar series, as it has one of the lowest mintages of any commemorative half dollar design type. Only 10,008 pieces were distributed, something that has been explained as resulting from a high original issue price of $2/coin. The Honolulu artist Juliette May Fraser created sketches of the designs, which were then modeled in three dimensions by the sculptor and medalist Chester Beach.
