Lot Description
1795 $1 Draped Bust, Off Center AU58 PCGS Secure. B-14, BB-51, R.2. The "Off Center" description applies to the design rather than the strike, and is better called Uncentered to avoid confusion, as the actual strike on this piece is exceptionally well centered. This variety is one of the most plentiful varieties of the year, so it is perhaps surprising that all observed examples are from perfect dies, according to the Bowers-Borckardt reference. The present piece is an exception to that observation, with faint clash marks visible at the upper reverse. New die states of the early dollars, like all other early series, are constantly being discovered. It is only after publication of ground-breaking references, such as the Bowers-Borckardt study, that further information will be discovered. This lovely near-Mint specimen has frosty luster with mostly brilliant, untoned surfaces showing only delicate champagne toning. Delicate handling marks are noted, with faint radial adjustment marks around the entire reverse perimeter.
