Lot Description
1795 $1 Draped Bust, Off Center Fine 12 PCGS. B-14, BB-51, R.2. Planchet preparation was an imprecise process at the Mint in 1795. All kinds of imperfections are encountered, including overweight planchets, voids, defects, and other flaws. This example hits for a high average in the "blame-the-planchet derby," with several criss-crossing adjustment marks (now minimized by wear) across the obverse and a rim defect at 10 o'clock. The reverse is in the game, too, with some planchet granularity seen in the fields and beneath the eagle. Despite these Mint-related flaws, this is actually a pleasant example of the Off-Center Portrait variety. It is the only use of this "set left" design, which was quickly corrected on the BB-52 variety and never revisited in the Draped Bust series. Smooth wear exists on the nicely-detailed devices, and this early dollar appears a few points sharper than the assigned grade, most likely due to the planchet issues. Pleasing lilac and gold overtones enhance the silver-gray surfaces.
