Lot Description
1795 $1 Draped Bust, Off Center AU55 PCGS. B-14, BB-51, R.2. Bowers-Borckardt Die State I. The Draped Bust design was employed for the first time in 1795, replacing the Flowing Hair dollars struck earlier in the year. Two die varieties of the Draped Bust type are known for the date, differentiated by the placement of the bust on the obverse. The present coin represents the BB-51 variety, with the bust positioned too far to the left so that the highest wave of hair is under B in LIBERTY. The present coin is an attractive Choice AU specimen, with just a trace of wear showing on the sharply detailed design elements. The lustrous surfaces are accented by pleasing shades of champagne-gold and turquoise patina, and only minor contact marks are evident. Population for BB-51: 10 in 55, 18 finer (4/12).
