Lot Description
1879-CC $1 MS 64 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. Aided greatly by favorable railroad tariffs, Nevada mine owners continued to ship their silver bullion to the San Francisco Mint despite the proximity of the Carson City facility. It is little wonder, therefore, that production at the latter branch mint sank to a mere 756,000 pieces in 1879. Bowers (1993) asserts that only 500-1,200 Deep Mirror Prooflike coins are extant of both the Capped Die and Perfect Mintmark varieties. Although most of these coins are of the latter variety, the present example is both absolutely and conditionally rare. The surfaces display remarkably bold cameo contrast for the issue, the devices being richly endowed with mint frost. The strike is not perfect, but the highpoints are more sharply defined than expected for the series. With no individually distracting abrasions, this coin is an appealing representative of this perennially popular CC-mint delivery. Population: 23 in 64, with a mere 2 finer (10/00). From the Gregg Bingham NFL Collection.
