Lot Description
1879-CC $1 MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike NGC. The 1880-CC, 1881-CC, and the 1885-CC all have lower mintages than the 1879-CC, but the latter is unquestionable the king of Carson City Morgan Dollars from the first era of their production, 1878 to 1885. The reason for the rarity of the 1879-CC is that, unlike other CC-mint dates from the period, it did not emerge in large quantity from the GSA hoard, dispersed in the 1970s. Demand for high quality examples is enormous, and the few Deep Mirror Prooflike pieces are especially desired, since the frosty devices and flashy fields provide the greatest eye appeal. The present nicely struck Gem has pleasing mint frost throughout the portrait and eagle, which lends a cameo appearance. Although the centers and fields are brilliant, lovely golden-brown, plum, and ocean-blue colors adorn the margins, and further promote the eye appeal. The cheek and fields are impressively clean, and only one moderate bagmark is present, concealed within the recesses of Liberty's hair. This older holder NGC example is significant as the finest NGC-certified Clear CC 1879-CC, since the only other MS65 Deep Mirror Prooflike piece (as of 9/05) represents the Capped Die variety. NGC has not encapsulated any 1879-CC in MS66 or higher grades. Population: 1 in 65, 0 finer (10/05). From The Napa Valley Collection, Part Two.
