Lot Description
1901-S $1 MS66 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. Jack Lee. Far and away the Finest Known with the Deep Mirror Prooflike fields and a nearly the finest of the entire date. The surfaces are outstanding, quite an important fact for collectors who appreciate the delicate mirror fields, which so often show myriad handling ticks. Not to here, as the surfaces are excellent, and Liberty's cheek and neck are very close to pristine. The coin is toned a light gold color over the lower two thirds on the obverse, with the area from her cap and above lighter. On the reverse, the coin has traces of gold toning primarily around the rim. For the strike we note minor weakness on the curls over Liberty's ear and similar minor weakness on the eagle's chest, but finding a specimen without this might not be possible for this scarce date. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports show this coin all alone as the finest, with the next grade noted to be a pair rated as MS64 DMPL. A total of nine coins have been seen in all grades of DMPL by the two services, reflecting the extreme rarity of this issue. From The Dr. Hoffnagle Collection of Morgan Dollars.
