Lot Description
1887 $3 PR66 S Ultra Cameo NGC. The proof mintage for this date was just 160 coins, and examples are known with normal die alignment, or with an inverted reverse such as this example. In addition, perhaps two or three proofs of this date are known double struck, first with the inverted reverse and then with the reverse in the normal alignment, making a spectacular variety. Certainly the advanced specialist will want examples of all three of these different varieties. Wouldn't that make an impressive exhibit? Harry Bass was one such collector who owned each of these different variances. This example is extraordinary with nearly flawless surfaces. Both sides have extremely deep mirrored fields and highly lustrous devices with bright yellow color. A few subtle hairlines in the field are only visible with the closest inspection. The fields also exhibit the wavy or watery appearance usually seen on high quality proof gold coins. Although as many as 75 to 100 proof examples of this date survive, few can match this coin for aesthetic appeal. In fact, only two of the nine Ultra Cameo proof examples certified by NGC had received the star designation, and the other one is a lower grade example. Census: 1 in 66 Ultra Cameo, 2 finer (4/06).
