Ron Guth: The mintage of the 1849 $5 Oregon gold piece has been listed as 6,000 pieces (and possibly more), but the number of surviving examples is exceedingly low.  PCGS has certified just over two dozen examples, which may include some duplicates.  To date, no Mint State examples have turned up.  The wide distribution of grades (from Fair 2 to AU 58) indicates the coins were accepted by their intended audience, and the pieces circulated freely.
