Die trial struck on white metal (tin or pewter). Bowers (in Judd, the 10th edition) calls the bust on this die trial "Longacre's French Liberty Head", the same term he uses to describe the busts on 1859 Half Dollar patterns ranging from Judd-237 to Judd-246. However, there are numerous differences between this die trial and those patterns, including the hair style, the shape of the face, and the lack of the word LIBERTY on the scroll. The lettering on Judd-237 to Judd-246 is in the distinctive Paquet style, so we suspect that Paquet copied and modified the bust on this die trial, which we believe to be the true French Liberty Head by Longacre.
Bowers and Teichman agree that three examples are known. Two have been certified by PCGS, the best of which is PCGS MS62.
