Ron Guth: The 1912-D Liberty Nickel is one of the more common dates in the series, but the mintmark on the back adds a lot to this coin's popularity. Collectors should have no problem finding a circulated example or even a nice Mint State example. According to the PCGS Population Report (as of June 2011), the most frequently-seen Mint State grade is MS-64, followed by MS-63. Gems are plentiful but become scarce in MS-66, with none graded higher. The most desirable examples are those with a full strike and choice, original color.
