Ron Guth: The 1847 Quarter Dollar is very rare in Proof condition.  Various rosters have placed the total surviving population as high as eight different pieces in a range of grades from PR62 to PR66.  The finest is most likely the lone NGC PR66, though either of the two PCGS PR65's illustrated above are in contention, as well.  These are delightful coins which have suffered in obscurity for many years and now their rarity is finally being recognized.
