David Akers (1975/88)
: Description: Obverse. Similar to J-284 except for the date. Reverse. Identical to J-284.
Comments: There are three auction records for this pattern, all within the space of nine years in the late 19th Century. However these three offerings represented only one coin. It is rather surprising that R.C. Davis, in his listing of patterns (the first such listing) in The Coin Collector's Journal in October, 1885, failed to mention the existence of this pattern, especially since all three sales of the piece occurred prior to the publication of his list.
...I believe that it is unique since the only specimen that is traceable today is in the Johns Hopkins University collection at Evergreen House. It is the same specimen that appeared in the Woodward, Ely, and Cohen sales and was purchased at the Woodward sale by T.H. Garrett.
