Ron Guth: In 1898, Philadelphia Mint employees created a mere 75 Double Eagles in Proof condition.  Today, an estimated 30-40 survive.  All known examples show some degree of cameo contrast (those that are listed as non-Cameos on the PCGS Population Report were graded before PCGS began recognizing Cameo and Deep Cameo designations).  Approximately fifty precent of the known examples are Cameos; the balance are Deep Cameos.  Most examples are in fairly nice condition, at least PR64, though there are several hairlined examples that have appeared on the market. The PCGS CoinFacts Condition Census consists entirely of PR64 and PR65 examples, with the finest being a pair of PR65 Cameos.
