David Akers (1975/88): Despite the comparatively high proof mintage, the 1867 is very rare in proof with less than ten pieces in existence. Since an 1867 proof is at least as rare as some other proofs with mintages that are only half as great, it is my opinion that many of the 50 struck remained unsold at the end of the year and were subsequently melted.
